A new community study has found that the mussel oil extract PCSO-524, derived from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, has a pain-relieving effect on arthritis patients without any side effects. Researchers from the University Clinic Warsaw, in collaboration with the company Pharmalink, conducted a clinical study on the treatment of arthritis using the mussel oil extract PCSO-524. Over three months, 50 participants were given either the mussel oil extract or capsules of fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids). Those who took the mussel oil extract reported significantly less joint pain and greater joint mobility, with no negative side effects. In contrast, those who took fish oil capsules reported only a slight reduction in pain, with no improvement in joint mobility and some experiencing side effects such as nausea and loss of appetite.

Previous studies have shown that the mussel oil extract has an anti-inflammatory effect, which is around 300 times higher than that of fish oils. “For this reason, even small amounts of the active ingredient are very effective,” says Dr. Szwadzki. “Previous studies have shown that PCSO-524 can help with arthritis, but the study results have even surprised us.” Dr. Szechinski, the lead author of the study, adds: “High doses of fish oil inhibit blood clotting. Since PCSO-524 shows a better effect on arthritis patients, a safe and effective drug is now available. The additional pain-relieving effect can also reduce the use of painkillers or even eliminate them altogether.”

This study provides promising results for the use of the mussel oil extract PCSO-524 as a safe and effective treatment for arthritis, with the added benefit of pain relief without any negative side effects. The anti-inflammatory properties of the extract make it a potentially valuable alternative to traditional treatments, and further research is needed to explore its full potential.
