Volkswagen to Introduce Car-to-Car and Car-to-X Communication in 2019

Volkswagen, the German automaker, is set to introduce a new technology in 2019 that will allow cars and parts of the transportation infrastructure to communicate with each other. The technology, called pWLAN (IEEE 802.11p), will enable cars to exchange information about temporary traffic risks with other vehicles and the transportation infrastructure. This will help to reduce the number of accidents on the road and make driving safer. The pWLAN technology, which is specifically designed for automotive applications, will allow the exchange of important traffic data, warnings, and sensor data within a few milliseconds over a range of 500 meters.

The technology will also expand the driver’s field of vision by several hundred meters and provide them with additional information, allowing them to indirectly see around corners. Volkswagen has stated that the use of a dedicated frequency band for traffic safety will not result in any additional costs for the user. The data will not be centrally collected, and an existing mobile network will not be required. Volkswagen aims to increase road safety and hopes that the system will be used across different car manufacturers. The technology will also involve the police and emergency services in its preparations for launch.

Volkswagen’s new technology is part of the basic requirements for autonomous and connected driving, which is expected to become a part of everyday life in the near future. The company has recently announced a partnership with Nvidia to expand its areas of deep learning and artificial intelligence. With the introduction of car-to-car and car-to-X communication, Volkswagen is taking a significant step towards making driving safer and more efficient.
