Investing in plant-based meat alternatives can reduce climate-damaging CO2 emissions more effectively than eco-friendly buildings, emission-free vehicles, and other sectors, according to a study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The report examined which climate protection measures are most effective and should be prioritized. The analysts found that investing in plant-based meat alternatives is the most efficient way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to climate protection. Such investments can save significantly more emissions than eco-friendly processes in the cement industry (3x), better-insulated and eco-friendly buildings (7x), and emission-free vehicles (11x). The study is based on scientific estimates that livestock farming is responsible for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and the food industry accounts for 26% of current emissions.

According to the analysts’ forecast, the consumption of alternative proteins will increase significantly in the coming years. By 2035, 11% of all proteins are expected to come from plant-based meat alternatives, which could reduce agricultural CO2 emissions to below one gigatonne. The study also examined the consumption of meat alternatives and consumers’ opinions on plant-based meat alternatives. The BCG surveyed 3,700 consumers from the US, China, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, France, Spain, and Germany. Two-thirds of the respondents said they had already tried alternative proteins, including meat, milk, and egg substitutes made from soy, peas, beans, and other plants, as well as proteins produced from mushrooms and microorganisms. Over three-quarters of consumers believe that alternative proteins are healthier than animal proteins, but the price remains a challenge. Plant-based protein sources must not be more expensive than animal products, and consumers accept a price of 50-90% of the animal original on average.

Investing in plant-based meat alternatives is a crucial step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. The study’s findings highlight the importance of prioritizing such investments and promoting alternative protein consumption to achieve a sustainable future. As the demand for alternative proteins continues to grow, it is essential to ensure that they are affordable and accessible to all consumers.
