Cannabis Use Linked to Decreased Sperm Production

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) has found that regular cannabis use can lead to a decrease in sperm production. The study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, involved experiments with six Rhesus monkeys who were given daily doses of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. Over time, the monkeys experienced a gradual decrease in testicular size, with an average loss of 59% of their original volume. After four months of abstaining from THC, the monkeys’ testicles did grow back, but only to 73% of their original size.

The researchers also found that the monkeys’ hormone levels were affected by the THC. The monkeys experienced a significant decrease in both estradiol and total testosterone levels, as well as an increase in the production of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the pituitary gland, a hormone gland in the brain. This suggests that THC may cause a central nervous system disorder that affects hormone production. However, the hormonal parameters did recover after the monkeys stopped using THC, with total testosterone levels increasing by 1.3 ng/ml and estradiol levels increasing by 2.9 pg/ml, while FSH levels decreased by 0.06 ng/ml.

Previous studies have also shown that cannabis use can negatively impact sperm production in young men. According to a publication in the American Journal of Epidemiology, smoking one cannabis cigarette per week can reduce sperm concentration by 28%, while frequent use can lead to a 52% decrease in concentration. The OHSU study adds to this body of research, suggesting that regular cannabis use can also lead to testicular atrophy and hormonal imbalances.

In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that regular cannabis use can have negative effects on male fertility. While further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind these effects, the study’s authors recommend that men who are trying to conceive should avoid using cannabis.
