Plant-based milk alternatives have been gaining popularity in recent years, with many people opting for them as a healthier and more ethical alternative to traditional dairy products. However, a new study from the University of Minnesota has found that these alternatives may not be as nutritionally beneficial as cow’s milk.

The study analyzed 233 plant-based milk products from 23 different companies and found that only 12% of them had the same or higher levels of calcium, vitamin D, and protein as cow’s milk. The majority of plant-based milk alternatives are made from soy, almonds, and oats, and many are fortified with calcium and vitamin D. However, the researchers found that the protein content of these products was generally lower than that of cow’s milk, with only 16% of products exceeding the protein content of cow’s milk.

The study’s lead author, Abigail Johnson, presented the findings at the NUTRITION 2023 conference and emphasized the importance of consumers being aware of the nutritional differences between plant-based milk alternatives and cow’s milk. She suggested that consumers should pay attention to the calcium and vitamin D content of these products and consider other sources of these nutrients in their diet.

While plant-based milk alternatives may not be as nutritionally beneficial as cow’s milk, they do offer other potential health benefits. Many of these products are high in fiber, which can have a positive impact on digestive health. The researchers plan to continue studying the nutritional content of plant-based milk alternatives to better understand their potential health benefits and drawbacks.

Overall, the study highlights the importance of consumers being informed about the nutritional content of the foods they consume. While plant-based milk alternatives may be a good option for those who are lactose intolerant or have ethical concerns about consuming dairy products, they may not be the best choice for those looking to maximize their nutritional intake.
