The elusive rock flying squirrel, a mammal that can grow up to a meter long and weigh two and a half kilos, has been found to have at least three different species, according to a recent study. Despite its size, the rock flying squirrel is one of the rarest animals in the world, with few sightings in the wild. It is also only found in the Himalayan Mountains, making it even more difficult to study.

The Himalayan Mountains stretch through several countries, including Pakistan, China, Nepal, Myanmar, and India. The region is known for its unique flora and fauna, with the rock flying squirrel being one of the most notable species. The animal was first described in 1888 and was believed to be extinct for 70 years until a living specimen was found in 1994. Since then, no further sightings have been reported, but the discovery of the animal’s feces suggests that it is still alive.

Until recently, it was unclear whether the rock flying squirrel lived in the tops of fir forests or in the rocky mountains. Conflicting reports from scientists who had studied the animal added to the confusion. However, a group of Chinese and Australian researchers decided to examine all previous studies and museum specimens of the animal, as well as compare the DNA of all available specimens. Their study, published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, revealed that there are at least three different species of the rock flying squirrel.

The discovery of multiple species of the rock flying squirrel highlights the importance of continued research and conservation efforts in the Himalayan Mountains. With so many unique and rare species in the region, it is crucial to protect their habitats and ensure their survival for future generations.
