Young people are increasingly turning away from traditional news media, according to a study by the GESIS Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences in Germany. The study found that those with low levels of interest in information, known as “low-information-oriented” individuals, have a low level of formal education and instead use platforms like TikTok for their news. In the 14-24 age group, 22% fall into this category, with almost half of those aged 14-17 (45%) not using news media at all. The study also found that those with low levels of interest in information tend to have little knowledge of journalism and the role of the media, and often receive news through social media.

The study also revealed that most young people belong to groups where different forms of discrimination are present, but political discussions are almost non-existent. Topics such as discrimination, social justice, and equality are more likely to be discussed. One of the main criticisms of established media among those surveyed was the lack of relevance of the content to their own lives. They also felt that journalism was associated with negative feelings and fake news. The participants felt that the media often presented a single perspective, while alternative perspectives were underrepresented, leading to pressure to accept the prevailing opinion.

The young people in the low-information-oriented group mainly consume entertaining content that they feel is relevant to their lives. TikTok is the most popular source of information, followed closely by platforms like Instagram and YouTube. Channels like “Herr Anwalt” or “Rezo” are popular among this group, as they are seen as trustworthy and cover important topics. The study highlights the need for traditional news media to adapt to the changing habits of young people and to provide content that is relevant and engaging to them.
