The researchers at the DKFZ have identified a substance responsible for the formation of metastases after the removal of a tumor. The starting point for the research was the observation that metastases often form, especially in breast cancer and black skin cancer, after the tumors have been removed. According to the experts, this fact means that the original cancer site, also known as the primary tumor in medicine, can suppress the formation and growth of metastases. It is only after the removal of the primary tumor that a large number of metastases become noticeable, say the researchers who investigated the phenomenon further.

After extensive research, the scientists at the DKFZ have identified the messenger substance called Angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPLT4), which the tumor cells release into the patient’s blood. According to the researchers, this substance suppresses the formation of metastases. Experiments with mice have already confirmed this theory, and the results suggest that this is also the case in humans. However, further research and subsequent clinical studies are necessary. The researchers’ top priority is now the more detailed investigation of the messenger substance. Ideally, this substance can be used in cancer therapy in the future after doctors have removed a cancer patient’s primary tumor. According to the researchers, this could prevent, slow down, or delay the formation of life-threatening metastases.

The discovery of the messenger substance ANGPLT4 is a significant breakthrough in cancer research. The identification of this substance could lead to a new approach in cancer therapy, which could significantly improve the prognosis for cancer patients.
