The Swiss Sustainable Yachts AG (SSY) has developed a new yacht called AQUON One that can produce its own hydrogen fuel. Equipped with a photovoltaic system and a hydrogen generator, the yacht can theoretically have an unlimited range in eco-mode, as long as there is enough sunlight. According to the developers, the AQUON One is a “smart designer catamaran that redefines premium yachting” and offers “an independent lifestyle for sustainable luxury.” The yacht has already been sold, and the first model is now in operation.

The AQUON One has 64 square meters of solar panels on its roof, which charge its lithium-ion batteries. The batteries power the yacht’s propulsion and provide energy for the passengers. When the batteries are fully charged, any excess solar energy is used to produce hydrogen from desalinated seawater. The hydrogen is compressed and stored at 300 bar. If additional energy is needed, fuel cells can convert the hydrogen back into electrical energy for propulsion. The AQUON One emits only water and heat, making it a zero-emission vessel.

The yacht has a theoretical unlimited range in eco-mode, as long as there is enough sunlight and it travels at a speed of 4 to 6 knots (7 to 11 km/h). However, the practical range is limited by the need to maintain or replace components of the power generation process, such as the desalination system. In the absence of sunlight, the AQUON One can travel for up to three days in eco-mode at 4 to 6 knots. The yacht is 21 meters long and has 250 square meters of living space, which can accommodate eight to ten passengers. In addition to the bedrooms, there is a kitchen with a grill, a bar, a living room, and a crew quarters. The AQUON One is a remarkable achievement in sustainable luxury yachting, and it sets a new standard for eco-friendly marine transportation.
