A recent study conducted by scientists at the Western Sydney University has found that zinc can significantly reduce the duration and intensity of symptoms associated with viral colds. However, the study did not find any preventive effect of zinc supplements. With the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in many countries, there has been an increase in cases of cough, sore throat, runny nose, and other typical cold symptoms caused by rhinoviruses and other pathogens. The researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 28 studies involving 5,446 adult participants without zinc deficiency to investigate the effects of zinc lozenges and nasal sprays on the onset, duration, and symptoms of colds.

The study found that while zinc cannot prevent infection with cold viruses, it can reduce the duration and intensity of symptoms. Participants who started taking zinc supplements at the onset of cold symptoms had significantly fewer complaints from the third day of infection compared to the control group. Zinc supplements also doubled the likelihood of overcoming colds within seven days and reduced the incidence of severe symptoms such as fever. The researchers noted that the effects of zinc go beyond simply compensating for a zinc deficiency. They found that zinc ions inhibit viral replication, stabilize cell membranes, and reduce inflammation of the mucous membranes.

The study confirms that zinc can have a beneficial effect on viral colds. The researchers suggest that zinc is a natural alternative to common medications due to its good tolerability. However, the study did not find any preventive effect of zinc supplements. With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the findings of this study may provide some relief to those experiencing cold symptoms.
